Why HR is Essential to Your Business

When most people think of human resources, they think of administrative functions like monitoring payroll and distributing information about employee health benefits. But HR departments are responsible for so much more than that. In fact, human resource management is arguably the most important aspect of any business. A company is only as good as its workforce, and human resources professionals are charged with building and maintaining a strong team. Through recruiting, training, and planning company-wide events, those who work in human resources can have a big impact on a company’s success. If you haven’t built an effective HR team, make that priority one. Need more convincing? Here are four human resources functions that are key to creating a lasting business:

#1: Recruiting Top Talent

One major component of human resources planning is identifying staffing needs. Once needs are identified, the HR department is responsible for recruiting qualified candidates and filling open positions with top talent. Here at Formstack, we have a dedicated Talent Team that focuses on attracting top-notch professionals by compiling job descriptions, searching social networks like LinkedIn, maintaining an attractive culture, developing an effective hiring process, and more.

Recruiting talent is perhaps the most important function of the HR team because employees who are the right fit for the job and company are happier and more invested in the company’s success. They speak highly of the organization and refer friends and business contacts to other open positions.

#2: Developing Leaders

Another key area of human resources planning is leadership development. Great companies aim to offer an environment conducive to employee betterment and growth. To reach that goal, HR employees develop training programs, encourage teams to participate in professional development courses, and create or fill open leadership roles in-house. Developing leaders is an important part of the HR role because it provides direction for employees and helps with retention. It gives employees an idea of what growth might look like for them within the organization. And it encourages them to seek opportunities to gain new skills and contribute to the overall forward movement of the company. Formstack’s Talent Team is currently working through an initiative to involve more employees in the company’s hiring process, which includes offering training for conducting interviews.

#3: Managing Employee Performance and Satisfaction

The success of a business is highly dependent on the success of its employees. If employees are not performing to the best of their abilities or if they are not satisfied with their roles, the company will suffer. Thus, another key aspect of human resource management involves establishing and maintaining positive working relationships among employees. One way the HR department does this is by conducting employee satisfaction surveys and exit interviews to help the company address areas of dissatisfaction. HR teams also develop a performance review system that allows employees and managers to measure and discuss job performance. At Formstack, our annual performance review process includes detailed self-assessments and manager assessments that are completed using Formstack forms. Our online forms streamline the process by allowing employees and managers to quickly submit assessments and easily review the submissions.

#4: Building Corporate Culture

Employee retention is an important consideration for those involved in human resources planning. In order to retain the best employees, a company’s culture needs to be positive and engaging. We take pride in our culture at Formstack, and we even have a culture code that includes key values like injecting positivity into all interactions and helping others succeed. The human resources department has a big hand in developing and maintaining the culture within an organization. The HR team often plans company events, organizes volunteer opportunities, manages company holidays and paid leaves, and ensures company values are upheld.

Use Online Forms to Streamline Human Resource Management

When it comes to managing a workforce, there is a lot of paperwork involved! Some common human resources forms include job applications, employee handbook acknowledgment forms, PTO request forms, and performance reviews. If you want to save valuable time for your HR team, online forms are the way to go. An online form builder like Formstack can help you simplify human resource management through an easy drag-and-drop interface and secure data collection.
